What Are You Buying on Black Friday?

Where will the best deals be on Black Friday?

Should you buy that gift now? Or will the sales be better later in December?

What’s expected to happen with the top retail categories this Holiday Season? That depends on what you want to buy. Here is a quick “snap-shot” of several major shopping categories for tomorrow and into the Holiday Season:

Apparel: Buy Now … Or Maybe Wait: Retailers are expected to offer 30%  or greater discounts on much of their apparel, and based on my overflowing email, many clothing retailers have not waited for Black Friday to drop prices. Will these deals get even better as we get closer to Christmas? Maybe. Should you wait to buy that coveted red cashmere sweater? Maybe not. Reason being? The downturn in the economy in the past years have many retailers cutting back on the amount of inventory they stocked this season. On the other hand, if you are simply looking for a good deal, and you don’t have to have a particular item, consider waiting. Retailers are expected to increase sales as much as 40-60% later in the season. And if you can wait until January for that clothing purchase, historically the deals will be even better.

Tablets, Laptops and Desktops: One of the hottest items this season is the tablet. Seems like everyone is getting one, and as a result, you might be hard-pressed to find any deals on the new Amazon Kindle Fire and the ever popular iPads this season. That being said, entry level tablets which offer less features are out there at some pretty decent deals. Consider a generic android tablet for as low as $49. Target recently posted the Kindle Keyboard 3G, normally $139, will be $85 on Black Friday. Amazon is offering the Kindle DX, normally $379, for $259. Amazon is also offering up to $100 off qualified devices, which includes the Fire, when you join Audible’s AudibleListener Gold plan for 12 months. That’s some great pricing if these items are on your shopping list!

And what about laptops and desktop computers? Several big-box retailers such as Best Buy and Wal-Mart are already offering dual-core processor laptops in the $300 range or less. Walmart is offering an HP dual-core laptop for $248 and Newegg has an Acer desktop with an Intel i3 processor for $329.99! Might be a good time to get a decent deal and upgrade your computer!

High Definition TV’s: TV’s have historically been one of the most sought after Black Friday deals. However, this year, sales on TV’s have been lackluster as many house-holds have already upgraded to HD-TV’s. This combination has TV retailers offering some really awesome, aggressive pricing on HD TV’s this Friday. Both Walmart and Target have 32″ LCD-HD TV’s for $278! Lower-end 42″ LCD TV’s in the $400 range. Even better deals are available on the smaller TV’s targeted towards bedrooms, dens, and offices. Walmart has a $98 19″ LCD TV. Wow! Should you buy now? Consider this: due to the less than stellar demand for TV’s this year, TV deals should continue through-out the Holiday Shopping season. So if you need to spread the spending out over the next month, and you don’t have to have a specific brand/feature in mind, this might be one to consider waiting on.

Toys: Buy Now! Similar to apparel, many toy retailers have cut their inventory this season in the effort to keep pricing up. Lower inventory means these retailers may not feel the need to offer those deep discounts to boost sales and clear inventory as they have the past few years. Some of the hottest toys of the season don’t have such deep discount offerings as in the previous years, and may be in limited supply. Meaning, if there is a “must have” toy on your list, you are best to get it now. Hot toy items very well could sell out early in the shopping season. As in previous years, some of the best deals may found at Walmart, Toys-r-Us and Target this season.

Video Gaming Consoles: With no new “it” gaming system released this year, retailers are focusing on the existing systems. The best deals are on the older versions such as the Nintendo DS. You can expect to see various kinds of bundles for gaming systems, including gift cards, extra games or other add-ons included with the purchase of a system. Target has a $199 PS3 bundle which includes two games; a $369 value. Toys-r-Us includes a $20 gift card with the purchase of DSi or DSiXL game systems. Walmart has an xBox 360 for $199, which includes a $50 gift card and a game, and a Wii for $99!

Need an iPod for someone? Target is offering a $40 with the purchase of a $195 8gb iPod; other retailers have similar deals.

Last but not least: Many retailers are already offering deals online TODAY!

So what are you buying this Black Friday?

Happy Thankgiving to all! I’m off to find my own Black Friday deals now!

Hi Carol, Thanks for the rundown of deals and when to buy them! I’m not in the market for many specific items, except for one you mentioned above. Not telling what it is in case one of my loved ones is reading this post!

I will caution that with both tablets and computers, it’s important to pay attention to specs so that tomorrow you don’t regret the great deal you got today.

What are you shopping for? 🙂
