Got a new Kindle for Christmas? Great! The Kindle e-reader and Amazon’s wide selection of e-books are a book reader’s best friend. But how to save money and still be able to take full advantage of all that reading material? Read on, my friend, to learn more on how to “get more for less” with your Kindle.

Kindle Free Book Collections: Something free does exist! You can download and read for free thousands of  classics and out-of-copyright, pre-1923 books including such popular classics as The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, Pride and Prejudice, and Treasure Island.

Another method to finding free books is to search within the Kindle Store. Type in “free kindle books” and you might find other free books too.

Kindle Daily Deal: Each day Amazon offers one book at a steeply discounted price, giving you another opportunity to snatch up a great deal.  Today’s Kindle Daily Deal is The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood, for $1.49. Yesterday’s price was $8.99, and will probably be that price again tomorrow. If you miss today’s deal, check back tomorrow. And the next day. And the next! Each day brings a new book deal. How cool is that!

100 Kindle Books for $3.99 or Less: Every month Amazon unveils a new list of Kindle books all discounted to $3.99 or less. These deals start on the first of the month, and expire the last day of the month. December deals include Faces of the Gone: A Mystery by Brad Parks for $2.99 (originally $25.99), Darkfever by Karen Marie Moning for $1.99 (originally $7.99), and 48 Days to The Work You Love by Dan Miller for $2.99 (originally $9.99). These book prices will end on December 31st and a new group of 100 book will be released on January 1st.

Sample that book! Not sure you want to purchase that “Best Sellers” book? Why not try the first chapter for free. Most Kindle books allow you to download the first chapter so you can give the book a “test run” before buying. Click on “Try A Sample” in the book detail page, read your chapter, then decide if you want to purchase it.

Lending/Borrowing Kindle Books: Remember how you used to share books with your best friend? Now you can share books again with your Kindle. E-books eligible for lending will have the message, “Lending: Enabled” on the product detail page. To see if you can loan books from your personal Kindle collection, go to “Manage Your Kindle” and look for “Loan this book” in the detail. Whether or not a book is available for lending is determined by the publisher or rights holder, and not all books will be eligible.

Public Library Books for KindleYou can borrow books from more than 11,000 libraries across the United States. These books can be read on any generation Kindle as well as with a Kindle App and through a browser with the Kindle Cloud Reader. Check with your local library to see if they support Kindle book lending; you will need a library card to borrow from the library, though.

Got a Kindle Fire? If so, you now have access to not just books but also movies, apps, games, music, and more! With a Kindle Fire you can take advantage of all the above cost-savings on books as well as these additional money saving features for Apps and music downloads:

Amazon Appstore for Android: Looking to expand your Fire beyond books? Check the Appstore daily for the free App of the Day. Recently offered freebies have included Monopoly ($4.99), Rudolph the Rednosed Reindeer ($3.99), A Charlie Brown Christmas ($6.99) and Wordoku ($1.00).

100 Albums for $5: Need new music on your Fire? Each month Amazon’s editors chose 100 MP3 albums you can download for only $5. December $5 deals range from The Sound of Music to Willie Nelson’s Greatest Hits to 7even Year Itch by Collective Soul.

Fuel Your Kindle FireThrough January 2012, Amazon is offering 1000’s of MP3 albums for $5 each. Just remember: this is a limited time deal, and is different than the 100 Albums for $5.

Artists on The Rise: Looking for new music artists? Then follow Artists on The Rise. Each month Amazon features its favorite new artists with free downloadable tracks. Give a new artist a spin and be on the ground floor of new music. Like what you heard? Then check back next month and pick up the artist’s newest release at a great price.

Are you an Amazon Prime member? Then be sure to take advantage of these two additional money-saving features available only to Prime members:

  • Kindle Owner’s Lending Library: You can borrow up to one book a month at no charge, and with no return date. That’s as many as twelve free books a year! With 1000’s of books in the Lending Library, you are sure to find something you like.
  • Prime Instant Video: With your Kindle Fire, take full advantage your Prime membership’s unlimited streaming of 10,000s of movies and TV shows directly to your Fire, and at no additional cost.

Kindle Not Required: Got a smartphone, computer, or Apple device? You too can take advantage of free and low cost books with the Free Kindle Reading Apps. Simply download the App for your specific device and you will soon be on your way to reading your favorite books.
