Can anyone buy an AmazonLocal deal? AmazonLocal is a members’ only local deals website, but great news: It’s FREE! So, yes, anyone can buy these deals so long as they become an AmazonLocal member. How? It’s easy. Just follow these steps and you’re on the way to your very own loco-priced local deals:

Step One: Become an AmazonLocal member in one of two ways:

  • Existing Amazon.com account holders: Sign in through your Amazon account, same name, same password.
  • New to Amazon? Simply open an Amazon account. All you need is an e-mail address and a password to get started.

All signed in? Time to set up your AmazonLocal account.

Step Two: Let AmazonLocal know the cities for which you want to receive deals. You can do this by entering either a city or a zip code. AmazonLocal then lets you know what your choices are. Choose your city and add it to your AmazonLocal subscription.

Shazaam! You’re in! That’s all it takes to have you ready to cash in on your very own local deals. AmazonLocal does all the work from here, sending you e-mail deal notifications for your selected areas. All you need to do now is sit back and wait for the deals to come your way.

And, you can sign up for as many deal cities as you want. Going on vacation near an AmazonLocal city? Sign up to access that city’s deals too. Simply remove the city from your subscription when the trip is over.

How do you buy an AmazonLocal Deal? You’ve finally found the first local deal just right for you. What are you waiting for? Buy it! And here’s a few tips to help you out:

  • Check the “Time Left To Purchase” display, found under the “Buy” button. Each deal is a limited time only offer. You can’t wait forever to buy the deal.
  • Check it out before you buy. Time permitting, (see above), do a little research to ensure this is the deal for you. Be in the know before you buy – it’s just a hassle if you change your mind after you purchase a deal.
  • Decision made. Click on the “Buy” button, review your order, and complete your transaction.
  • The deal arrives. AmazonLocal e-mails you a link to your purchased deal voucher as soon as the order is processed.

You’ve now just scored your very own crazy-priced local deal.

A few more tips on buying an AmazonLocal Deal:

  • Read “The Detail” first: Each deal comes with a detailed offer description as well as who is offering the deal. Know your deal before you buy to ensure you know exactly what you are getting.
  • Read “What You Need to Know” second: Each deal also comes with specific terms, including scheduling requirements, locations where it can be used and expiration dates. Save yourself any headaches and know a deal’s limitations before you buy.
  • Oh no! There’s no “Buy” button! So sorry. This deal is either sold out or no longer available.
  • Oops! You changed your mind after purchase. It happens. You might still be able to cancel your order, but you will need to contact AmazonLocal either by phone or e-mail to do this.
  • Not your deal today. There may be prior deals still available. Look at the bottom of the screen for more deal options for your selected city.

How to use an AmazonLocal Voucher: The voucher is how you will access your deal. Once you make a purchase, AmazonLocal e-mails you the link to your specific deal’s voucher. Don’t lose it! But if you do, that’s ok. Go into your AmazonLocal account and click on “Your Vouchers” to find a list of your purchased vouchers.

Once you are ready to use your voucher, print it and take it with you to the service provider. Or, you can access the voucher through a smartphone, Kindle with Special Offers (more on this below), or other mobile device.

Most vouchers come with an expiration date so be aware of this when you purchase as well as when you want to use it.

Boo! My Location isn’t listed at AmazonLocal. Don’t see your city? Don’t give up hope! AmazonLocal continues to add more locations across the U.S. How can you find out when AmazonLocal has added your location? You can subscribe now to local e-mails for your area and as soon as AmazonLocal adds that area, they will begin sending you the deals.

Have a Kindle? Great news! Kindle owners can now purchase AmazonLocal deals direct from their Kindles. You will  need to subscribe to the Special Offers & Sponsored Screensavers, though, to activate this feature. Read more about activating AmazonLocal on a Kindle device at AmazonLocal Help.

Amazon Kindle: My Favorite Money-Saving Tips

Hey Friend,

Just wanted to let you know that I have relaunched my blog at a whole new site, with a whole new look! Check it out, re-bookmark the new site, and follow me over there. Lots of new posts to read, like this post, ShopSavvy – A Savvy Shopper’s Essential Tool.

Hope to see you there!

Link to the Amazon Kindle: My Favorite Money-Saving Tips new and improved look.

Got a new Kindle for Christmas? Great! The Kindle e-reader and Amazon’s wide selection of e-books are a book reader’s best friend. But how to save money and still be able to take full advantage of all that reading material? Read on, my friend, to learn more on how to “get more for less” with your Kindle.

Kindle Free Book Collections: Something free does exist! You can download and read for free thousands of  classics and out-of-copyright, pre-1923 books including such popular classics as The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, Pride and Prejudice, and Treasure Island.

Another method to finding free books is to search within the Kindle Store. Type in “free kindle books” and you might find other free books too.

Kindle Daily Deal: Each day Amazon offers one book at a steeply discounted price, giving you another opportunity to snatch up a great deal.  Today’s Kindle Daily Deal is The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood, for $1.49. Yesterday’s price was $8.99, and will probably be that price again tomorrow. If you miss today’s deal, check back tomorrow. And the next day. And the next! Each day brings a new book deal. How cool is that!

100 Kindle Books for $3.99 or Less: Every month Amazon unveils a new list of Kindle books all discounted to $3.99 or less. These deals start on the first of the month, and expire the last day of the month. December deals include Faces of the Gone: A Mystery by Brad Parks for $2.99 (originally $25.99), Darkfever by Karen Marie Moning for $1.99 (originally $7.99), and 48 Days to The Work You Love by Dan Miller for $2.99 (originally $9.99). These book prices will end on December 31st and a new group of 100 book will be released on January 1st.

Sample that book! Not sure you want to purchase that “Best Sellers” book? Why not try the first chapter for free. Most Kindle books allow you to download the first chapter so you can give the book a “test run” before buying. Click on “Try A Sample” in the book detail page, read your chapter, then decide if you want to purchase it.

Lending/Borrowing Kindle Books: Remember how you used to share books with your best friend? Now you can share books again with your Kindle. E-books eligible for lending will have the message, “Lending: Enabled” on the product detail page. To see if you can loan books from your personal Kindle collection, go to “Manage Your Kindle” and look for “Loan this book” in the detail. Whether or not a book is available for lending is determined by the publisher or rights holder, and not all books will be eligible.

Public Library Books for KindleYou can borrow books from more than 11,000 libraries across the United States. These books can be read on any generation Kindle as well as with a Kindle App and through a browser with the Kindle Cloud Reader. Check with your local library to see if they support Kindle book lending; you will need a library card to borrow from the library, though.

Got a Kindle Fire? If so, you now have access to not just books but also movies, apps, games, music, and more! With a Kindle Fire you can take advantage of all the above cost-savings on books as well as these additional money saving features for Apps and music downloads:

Amazon Appstore for Android: Looking to expand your Fire beyond books? Check the Appstore daily for the free App of the Day. Recently offered freebies have included Monopoly ($4.99), Rudolph the Rednosed Reindeer ($3.99), A Charlie Brown Christmas ($6.99) and Wordoku ($1.00).

100 Albums for $5: Need new music on your Fire? Each month Amazon’s editors chose 100 MP3 albums you can download for only $5. December $5 deals range from The Sound of Music to Willie Nelson’s Greatest Hits to 7even Year Itch by Collective Soul.

Fuel Your Kindle FireThrough January 2012, Amazon is offering 1000’s of MP3 albums for $5 each. Just remember: this is a limited time deal, and is different than the 100 Albums for $5.

Artists on The Rise: Looking for new music artists? Then follow Artists on The Rise. Each month Amazon features its favorite new artists with free downloadable tracks. Give a new artist a spin and be on the ground floor of new music. Like what you heard? Then check back next month and pick up the artist’s newest release at a great price.

Are you an Amazon Prime member? Then be sure to take advantage of these two additional money-saving features available only to Prime members:

  • Kindle Owner’s Lending Library: You can borrow up to one book a month at no charge, and with no return date. That’s as many as twelve free books a year! With 1000’s of books in the Lending Library, you are sure to find something you like.
  • Prime Instant Video: With your Kindle Fire, take full advantage your Prime membership’s unlimited streaming of 10,000s of movies and TV shows directly to your Fire, and at no additional cost.

Want to know more about Amazon Prime? Read my blog post, How Prime is Amazon Prime? for features and benefits of being an Amazon Prime member.

Kindle Not Required: Got a smartphone, computer, or Apple device? You too can take advantage of free and low cost books with the Free Kindle Reading Apps. Simply download the App for your specific device and you will soon be on your way to reading your favorite books.

Are you now ready to read more, listen more, and watch more all for less money with your Kindle devices? What’s your favorite Kindle money-saving tip? Let us know in the Comments section below.

Gift Cards For Last Minute Gifts

In a pinch to get a last minute gift? Consider a gift card! Several online websites let you custom design your gift card and deliver it via e-mail. If online shopping isn’t your preference, then consider a local brick and mortar retailer.

Online Gift Card Giving Options: Don’t want to fight the crowds at your local mall? Let an online gift card website be your gift giving answer. Check out these four easy to use online gift card resources:

Giftly.com Giftly is great for last minute gift-giving. Why? Because Giftly can turn nearly any local business into a mobile gift card. Want to send your friend in Atlanta a gift card for that trendy clothing store she loves? Using Yelp’s database, Giftly lets you pick your store, create your own personalized gift card, then send it either by e-mail or Facebook to the recipient. Within a few moment’s time, you can design, purchase and  have that gift card delivered. It’s just that easy. Want to learn more about Giftly? Either click on the above link and go directly to Giftly, or read this helpful article at The Wonder of Tech: Giftly – The Next Generation of Gift Cards

GiftCards.com GiftCards.com offers several options for gift card giving. You can create your own or choose a predesigned card. Need a gift card today? Then choose the Virtual Card option and have an eGift Card delivered the same day. Have a MrRebates account? Purchase your gift card through Mr. Rebates and get an added bonus of a 1% rebate.

Groupon.com: Perhaps a Groupon gift certificate is the answer. You can purchase a specific deal at a great price and have it delivered to the recipient via email or smartphone. Or, you can purchase a Groupon Gift Card that allows the recipient to pick his own Groupon special. Either way, Groupon is a great option to simplify your gift giving. Want to learn more about Groupon and how it works? Check out my earlier blog: Are You A Groupon Groupie?

Amazon.com: Amazon offers one of the widest selections of inventory available in one location. So why not an Amazon gift card that is redeemable storewide and never expires? It can be printed at home, or delivered directly to the recipient via e-mail, Facebook or free 1-Day Shipping.  Create your own personalized eGift card with the new “upload your photo” option. Another option: give an eGift with a suggested gift item! Choose an item you think your recipient might like and have a photo of that item put on the gift card. The recipient gets a customized gift card, but is not restricted to purchasing that item.

Brick and Mortar Gift Card Giving Options: Don’t want to shop online? Many of your local retailers also stock a wide variety of gift cards. Here are four favorites that might be in your neighborhood:

Walgreens: Have a Walgreens nearby? Then check out their gift card inventory. From restaurants to clothing stores, music to electronics stores, Walgreens’ wide selection of gift cards make gift giving easy. And best of all: no crowds!

Walmart: Walmart brick and mortar stores stock gift cards from iTunes to Visa and Amex cards, restaurants, gaming gift cards and movie theatre gift cards too. Don’t have a Walmart nearby? Don’t want to deal with a crowded Walmart store? The online-only Walmart eGift card may be your solution. With a few clicks of your computer or iPad, your customized eGift card is on its way, arriving in the recipient’s e-mail within minutes of placing your order. Just remember though: eGift cards are only usable for online Walmart purchases, not in the store.

Kmart-Sears-Lands’End: You will be sure to make someone happy with a gift card that is useable at all three brands! Use the handy online order feature and create your own custom design. Then pick your method of delivery: mail, email or self-print. Mailing the gift card can take 3-7 days with free standard shipping and as much as $8.99 for next day delivery. If time is too short or you don’t want to pay expedited shipping, then choose either the self-print option or have an eGift card e-mailed to the recipient.

Kmart Sears Lands' End

Your Local Grocery Store: Most major grocery stores carry a sizable number of gift cards, making it easy to pick one up while you are getting groceries. Or give the gift of groceries with a gift card to the recipient’s local grocery store.

How Prime is Amazon Prime?

Hey Friend,

Just wanted to let you know that I have relaunched my blog at a whole new site, with a whole new look! Check it out, re-bookmark the new site, and follow me over there. Lots of new posts to read, like this post, Wouldn’t You Rather-Be-Shopping?

Hope to see you there!

Link to the new and improved Let’s Get Deals Today Home Page.

Link to the How Prime is Amazon Prime? new and improved look.

So How Prime is Amazon Prime? That depends, but for me, it’s primo prime, especially with the latest benefits added to the Amazon Prime membership.

Why would you consider an Amazon Prime membership, when free shipping is an every day option with Amazon’s Free Super Saving Shipping? Consider the following benefits of being an Amazon Prime member:

1. Free 2-day shipping. Yes, free, with no minimum purchase required! So go ahead and order that $5 item; it will be at your door in 2 days. Compare that to the $25 minimum purchase to qualify for Free Super Saving Shipping. How many times have you added an extra item to your order simply to get the Free Super Saving Shipping? I have, but not anymore with Prime!

2. Instant Streaming of thousands of movies and TV shows, including selections that are free only to Prime members. Movies and TV shows are updated constantly, keeping the viewing library fresh. Want to watch past episodes of Lost? All six seasons can be streamed for free with your Prime membership.

3. Instant Access to select Kindle books with the Kindle Owners’ Lending Library. Books can be “borrowed” from the Lending Library for as long as you want, no return date. Want to borrow the book, Elizabeth Street? Free with Prime, otherwise $7.99 for Kindle. That represents $79.90 savings if you borrow ten similar priced books a year.

All this for the low price of $79 a year. The savings alone from the Owners’ Lending Library will pay for my Prime membership. Amazon Prime also allows up to four members of one household to share one Prime membership.

Better yet, Amazon offers a FREE 30-day Prime membership trial offer.  Why not sign up now, maximize your holiday shopping with free 2-day shipping? Not only will this save you time this busy holiday shopping season, but money too! Think about all the gas you would use to drive around to five stores to complete your shopping list, when you could have used your Amazon Prime membership, from the comfort of your own home, and have these items on your doorstep in two days? My gas savings by shopping with Amazon Prime really adds up.

Sometimes your savings may be measuring in time saved, not dollars saved. Consider this: Your son tells you Wednesday morning that he is invited to a birthday party Friday night. You have to work, and the kids have after school activities. When are you going to get to a store to buy that gift? Amazon Prime can save the day! By noon, that gift is bought and on its way, and with the 2-day shipping, at your door with time to spare for that Friday night party.

Need a gift for that “someone special?” Consider an Amazon Prime membership if your someone special shops online, watches TV, and/or owns a Kindle. They too can now reap the rewards of Amazon Prime. Gifting a Kindle-owner an Amazon Prime membership is like gifting him with a Book of the Month membership, with fringe benefits! Wow, I just figured out what I am giving that someone special on my Holiday shopping list!

Christmas gifts.

A few more tidbits on Amazon Prime:

Maximizing the Free 2-Day Shipping:

  • Only items with the “Prime Eligible” next to the price qualify for Prime Free 2-Day Shipping. If you don’t see “Prime Eligible”, then you might incur shipping fees, as well as longer than 2-day shipping with the purchase of this item.
  • No minimum purchase required to qualify for the free shipping.
  • $3.99 shipping is also available for 1-day shipping. Just beware that this is a per-item fee, and not per order.

Maximizing Prime Instant Streaming:

  • Utilize the free streamings by searching for your favorite movies and TV shows in Prime Instant Video.
  • Not all Amazon Instant Streamings are free, even to Prime members. Prime-eligible free streaming is a sub-category of Amazon Instant Video, which offers over 100,000 different movies and TV shows.
  • The new Kindle Fire is a perfect companion for streaming. Simply be logged into your Amazon account, and the video library is wide open.
  • Streaming your favorite TV shows through your computer does not require anything special other than an internet connection and being logged into your Amazon account.
  • Streaming through your TV might require additional hardware depending on your TV.
  • Click on this link to discover more details on Instant Streaming with Amazon: Ways to Watch Amazon Instant Videos

Maximizing the Kindle Owners’ Lending Library:

  • Only Kindle owners can utilize the Lending Library.
  • Books borrowed from the Lending Library can only be read on your Kindle. You cannot borrow nor read these books on your smart phones, iPads, or computers.
  • Check out the Kindle Owners’ Lending Library before you purchase a book.
  • When searching Kindle books outside the Lending Library, check the purchase options to see if the book is also in the Lending Library.
  • Amazon limits the number of books you can borrow to one book per month, per Prime membership, not per Kindle registered. If you have more than one Kindle on your Prime account, you may need to coordinate who gets the free book this month!

Countdown to Black Friday with Amazon

Want to cash in on pre-Black Friday deals? Then check out Amazon’s Countdown to Black Friday for great offers on a wide variety of items from toys to electronics, music to tools, groceries to office supplies.

What are Amazon Black Friday Deals of the Week? Known as Lightning Deals, they are short term, often really good deals that Amazon is offering to anyone for the taking.

How can you search within Lightning Deals? Each day, Amazon’s Lightning Deals offers different categories of special pricing. Today’s deals might be in Electronics, Groceries, School Supplies, and Music. Tomorrow’s deals could be Electronics, Clothing, Home and Kitchen, Instruments and Scientific, and Tools. Click on the category that best suits your search. If you are like me, and you want to see ALL deals, leave the search open to view every offer there is at that moment in time. I have picked up some pretty good deals this way.

Why are they called Lightning Deals? Because Lightning Deals are a limited time offering, usually only 4 hours, and often sell out within the allotted time. Translation … if the deal is good, grab it. I have also missed out on a deal because I decided to “wait and see.”  Oh well, my loss, but someone else’s gain.

Lightning Deals change as frequently as every hour throughout the day so keep checking. One never knows what one might find! I have seen cameras, SD cards, computer keyboards, drums, toy dolls, books, cereal bars, and pots and pans. The list is endless. Sometimes the items offered might be older, discontinued items. Discontinued items are not always a bad thing. I don’t care if my new frying pan is actually last year’s model. Other times it could be excess inventory. That’s the “deal” with Lightning Deals. You just don’t know what’s going to show up.

How can you access these deals? Load the Amazon main page,

Then in the upper right hand corner, look for the Black Friday Deals Week countdown clock. Click on the box and you will be redirected to the Amazon Lightning Deals page, also known as Today’s Lightning Deals. Or you can go directly to the Black Friday Deals page with this direct link:

So stock up BEFORE Thanksgiving and avoid the crowds!

And what about after Thanksgiving, and you still need to pick up gifts? Keep checking the Amazon Today’s Lightning Deals. Although right now the focus is Black Friday, there’s always a “Lightning Deal” happening at Amazon. Lightning Deals are available throughout the year, with varying inventory, depending on the time of year. Who knows, in January you might even find a deal on a kitchen sink to go with that new frying pan!

I agree with Amazon: “Its never too early for a good deal.”
